The Carpentry Program provides training in the manipulative skills necessary to obtain employment in construction/framing and finishing occupations. Students will receive in-depth, "on-the-job" experience through a two-year apprentice training program. Instruction includes all types of wood and metal framing construction; a wide variety of exterior finishing and trim installation; interior trim and finishing; cabinet installation; equipment care and maintenance.
In the Carpentry program, students will develop the technical and academic skills necessary for entry-level construction careers. As juniors, the students work in the on-site lab learning and practicing essential skills needed in this field. As seniors, the students work as a crew completing off-site jobs throughout the community. Students will learn the following in the two-year program:

- General Shop and Construction Site Safety
- Hand and Power Tool Care, Maintenance and Safety
- Using Leveling Instruments
- Laying Out Buildings
- Footings and Foundations
- Rough Framing
- Interior and Exterior Finish
- Roof Finish
- Insulation
- Blueprint Comprehension
- Employability Skills
- 10-Hour Occupational Safety and Health Training (OSHA)
Prerequisites:
- Junior standing with no more than five credit deficiencies
- Strong math background
- Enjoy building and/or designing projects
- Good attendance is a plus!
College Articulation
In addition to being trained as entry-level construction field workers, Grant Career Center students have the opportunity to earn up to 24 credit hours from Hocking College or Cincinnati State Technical and Community College. If students continue their education at Hocking College, they can continue their carpentry studies and receive an Associate Degree of Technical Studies in Carpentry/Construction Management. At Cincinnati State, students can earn an Associate Degree in Building Technology.
